In an emergency council meeting held on Monday, the UCD Students’ Union (SU) passed a motion in support of Jim Gavin’s presidential bid. The move came less than a day after he announced he was withdrawing from the race, but it’s not like the SU is known for its political knowledge.
In fact, in recent times, the union has been known for its lack of backbone,I mean apolitical stances, sorry I mean nonpartisan, ugh lord would they just pick a term for lack of will and action already – ability to not get caught up in party politics. On Monday, all 10 class reps who turned up to council voted overwhelmingly to make an exception to this policy as a result of Jim Gavin’s compelling campaign (a work of art, truly).
The move marks the second time in the last year that the student body has gotten behind a Fianna Fáil presidential candidate (a growing trend? Who knows). It shouldn’t come as a surprise, following the news that they overtook the woke mob to become the largest youth political party on campus this year. Perhaps, the party is finally down with the kids again, or at least those who hate themselves enough to sit through council.

The Turbine Investigative Team (TIT) managed to uncover a copy of the motion by navigating the mythical ucdsu.ie (impossible to navigate, truly TIT deserves an award) and it reads as follows: Motion Of Endorsement of Jim Gavin in the Irish Presidential Debate.
Council Recognises: The presidential race doesn’t really matter as long as the person elected can string three sentences together and occasionally shake someone’s hand.
Council Notes: Jim Gavin recently announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. However, due to the timing of his withdrawal, his name will remain on the ballot.
Council Acknowledges: That we’ve never before had the opportunity to elect a president who doesn’t actually want the job.
Council Believes: It would be really, really funny if he won.
Council therefore mandates: That the UCD Students’ Union endorses Jim Gavin and uses every single resource at its disposal to campaign for his win. This includes, but is not limited to: a social media campaign, spending €500,000 of a certain party leader’s money, voter registration drives, newsletters, bribery, ballot stuffing, forming a junta, extortion, and canvassing.
In a statement following the council, the SU President stated that the union would be “proud to stand behind a man who’s already walking away. In my experience, it’s rare to see someone step down before being elected, and I have to admire that.”
