I really hope the other lecturers don't follow this guy, we cant remain in lockdown forever and the college experience was not nearly the same last year and it was far more difficult to learn. I was extremely happy to find out UCD is trying to maximize on campus learning and societies in contrast to other Irish universities as some of us chose to reject job offers in order to pursue graduate degrees in UCD this year. On top of all this I hear this guy is a poor lecturer, this article seems to just be an attempt at virtue signalling.

Thomas is completely ignoring the reality that the vast majority of students want to return to campus in the autumn. I agree however that compulsory mask wearing is a good idea. In regards to the duty of care to your students, the prospect of learning from their bedrooms for another semester is a greater threat to the mental health of students than this virus is to their physical health. 1 in 25,000 people in the country have the virus at the moment, it's time to return to some normality while of course taking precautions

Given Thomas let down his students last semster with zero live lectures post university lockdown until just before the exam, I think it is untrue to say he will serve his students online as effective. I was isolated and had no engagement with anyone when doing his online classes. One class a week would have made the experience better.
